"DRAMATIC and urgent action has been taken by Stratford-on-Avon District Council to prevent the demolition of buildings at Wellesbourne Airfield.

Today (Monday) the council’s ruling cabinet agreed to remove permitted development rights from the site owners, the Littler family. The decision took immediate effect and is now in force.

The cabinet also decided to seek powers to compulsorily purchase the airfield if negotiations with the owners fail and to obtain an injunction if any attempt is made to start the demolition process.

The moves by the cabinet were made under urgent business at a special meeting that had been arranged to discuss another issue.

Shock plans to begin demolishing the site were revealed by the family two weeks ago. The news – which would involve all the businesses there closing down with more than 200 jobs being lost – prompted urgent discussions between the tenants and leading figures at the district council.

The Littler family and developers Gladman are believed to be furious that their proposals to close down the airfield and build 1,500 homes on the land has been repeatedly rejected at every level – including that of the planning inspectorate.
Given that the airfield has been refused classification as a development site in the council’s core strategy, there is deep concern that the owners now want to render the site unusable for aviation purposes by wrecking it.

Just over a week ago Cllr Chris Saint (Cons, Shipston North), the leader of the council, wrote to Business Secretary Greg Clark and Small Businesses Minister Margot James, asking the government to intervene to help save the airfield. At the beginning of this week he was awaiting a reply.

It’s thought the airfield could be sold for £5.5 million. But its development value could be more than £100 million."

Planning Appeal

Dear Members and Supporters,

As someone who believes in Manston continuing as an airport , we would ask you to actively show your support by taking 5 or 10 minutes of your time in the next couple of days to make a representation on a planning application appeal.

Last year Lothian Shelf (718) Ltd, the company which Ann Gloag set up in September 2013 to purchase Manston Airport, applied to TDC for 3 change of use planning applications.

Ref. AA/Z2260/W/15/3140990 – Building 870 Manston Airport – change of use from airport use to general industrial use together with four storey extension and insertion of windows

Ref. AA/Z2260/W/15/3140992 - Manston Airport Cargo Centre & Responding Vehicle Point, Spitfire Way – change of use from airport use to storage and distribution use

Ref. AA/Z2260/W/15/3140994 – Building 4, Manston Airport, Spitfire Way – change of use from airport use to general industrial use.

TDC refused these applications but Lothian Shelf (718) Ltd has now appealed to the Secretary of State against the Council’s failure to give notice of its decision within the appropriate period on planning application.

This appeal is being dealt with by an exchange of written statements between Lothian Shelf and the Council and will be decided by an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State.  If you made any comments on the original application, the Council will send them to the Planning Inspectorate and they will be taken into account by the Inspector who decides the appeal.

If you wish to make further comment or did not make any objection t the original application, we would ask you to now please send an email saying you support TDCs decision and do not agree with the change of use applications for these three change of use appeals.

The closing date for any comments on this matter must be made by Wednesday 10th February 2016.

The government website with information on these appeals is HERE

Emails can be sent to CT1@pins.gsi.gov.uk

PLEASE – make the time to write and make your opinion known.   Every little bit of support helps in our fight to save Manston as an airport.

Kind regards,
Why Not Manston? Committee

Cabinet votes CP-NO on Manston airport- for now

THANET council cabinet members have voted not to pursue a compulsory purchase of the Manston airport site, but the move is unlikely to mark the end of the saga.

Cabinet unanimously agreed to officers’ recommendations published last week, which concluded potential partners RiverOak did not have “appropriate financial status” to operate an airport.

However, an additional motion was passed, meaning the council will write to RiverOak requesting the American firm sends confidential financial information to Transport Minister John Hayes for further inspection.

The move comes after council leader Iris Johnston held talks over the airport with the minister in London today (Thursday).  Speaking at the cabinet meeting, Cllr Johnston said: “The council cannot be expected to take a leap of faith- we have to be mindful.  “We cannot risk council tax payers’ funds and we have to have an indemnity partner that covers all the costs.”

Around 100 airport campaigners stood outside the local authority’s offices in Cecil Square, Margate before and during the meeting.

Conservative group leader Bob Bayford said: “People cannot seem to understand why the only people who are not in favour of a CPO is us [Thanet council]

“The people are looking to you [Cllr Johnston] to go for this- they’re looking for leadership and I do not think up until now that has really happened.”

All councillors will now debate the wider issues surrounding the Manston airport site at an extraordinary meeting scheduled to take place on December 16.
